Asked and answered
Questions
The questions that come up on the phone before a visit is booked, answered in the same words we would use on the call.

The shop
- Do you work on brands other than Viking?
- No. Ballast Point Appliance takes Viking work and nothing else — ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, built-in refrigeration, ventilation and dishwashers. Keeping to one manufacturer is what makes it possible to carry the right parts on the van instead of ordering them after the first visit. If your appliance is another make we will say so on the phone and you will not be charged for a visit.
- What is your relationship with the manufacturer?
- Ballast Point Appliance is an independent appliance repair company. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Viking or its parent company. All brand names and model numbers are the property of their respective owners and are used only to identify the appliances we service.
- What credentials do your technicians hold?
- EPA Section 608 certified technicians. Section 608 certification is required by federal law to handle refrigerant. It is issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, not by any appliance manufacturer. We also carry liability insurance. We hold no appointment or credential issued by an appliance manufacturer, and we do not describe ourselves as though we did.
Money
- What does a visit cost?
- $129 flat to diagnose, whatever the appliance and wherever you are inside the 40-mile radius. There is no separate call-out charge and no per-hour diagnostic time.
- Is the diagnostic fee credited toward the repair?
- Flat diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair when you approve the work. You get a written estimate before any part is ordered or any labour is billed. Nothing is ordered until you say so.
- What is the warranty on the work?
- 90 days on labour and 365 days on parts. Genuine OEM parts. The warranty covers the specific repair carried out, not unrelated faults that appear later on the same appliance.
- Do you fit aftermarket parts if they are cheaper?
- No. We fit genuine OEM parts only. An aftermarket control board or igniter may be half the price and is the most common reason a repair comes back inside a year, which would put it outside what we are willing to warrant.
Scheduling
- When can someone come out?
- Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Closed Sunday. We do not advertise emergency, after-hours or 24-hour service, because we do not run it. A call that arrives outside working hours is returned the next working morning.
- Which areas do you cover?
- Orange Park, Oakleaf Plantation, Fleming Island, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, Doctors Lake, Jacksonville — mobile service within 40 miles of Orange Park. There is no walk-in counter and no published street address, because there is nothing at one to visit.
- Will the appliance have to come out of the cabinetry?
- Sometimes, and we will tell you before it happens rather than during it. A built-in sits in an opening that was built around it, and some repairs — anything behind the appliance, most sealed-system work, a water connection upstream of a fill valve — cannot be reached from the front. Pulling a unit means clearing the floor in front of it, checking that the rails and the face frame will allow it, and protecting both. It is a different job from a component that can be reached in place, and it is priced as one. If we think a pull is likely we say so on the phone so nobody is surprised on the day.
- What should I have ready when I call?
- The appliance type, the model and serial from the rating plate, what the appliance is actually doing, and when it started. If anything changed just before — a storm, an outage, a deep kitchen clean — say so. That is usually enough to load the van correctly before we leave.
Clay County specifics
- Does the age of the kitchen change what you look for?
- It changes the order of the list. Much of the built-in equipment in this territory is in its second or third decade, and appliances do not fail at random across their life — they fail in a pattern. At this point on the curve it is the parts under mechanical load that report first: hinges, springs and door closers, then igniters and electrodes, then temperature probes that have drifted quietly out of tolerance. So on an older kitchen we check door closure before anything electrical, and we measure the oven cavity before anyone discusses an element. It also means cabinet openings sized around appliances that are no longer made, which we plan for before the pull rather than during it.
- My appliance failed weeks after a storm. Can they be connected?
- Often, yes. The area records roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, and a surge does not always kill a control board outright. It can damage a supply component that then fails days or weeks later, which is why the household has usually stopped connecting the two events by the time they call. We ask about recent storms and outages for that reason.
- Do you publish customer reviews or a star rating?
- Yes. The reviews page prints every entry we hold, in full, with a first name and a last initial, and the ones that are less than flattering stay in. The score beside them is the mean of exactly those entries and appears only on pages that print them.
