Why a Board Fails Weeks After the Storm

The appliance worked fine after the outage, so nobody connected the two events. Three weeks later it started refusing to wake. That gap is the most useful clue we get.

Between June and September the same call arrives on a two- to four-week lag behind the weather. The range or the oven has become unreliable. It works, then it does not, then it works again. Nothing is consistently broken. And when we ask whether the power went out recently, the answer is almost always yes — but the appliance was fine afterwards, so nobody thought it mattered.

It matters. The gap is the diagnosis.

What a surge actually does

A voltage transient that reaches an appliance control does not usually destroy it in one event. It degrades it. Electrolytic capacitors on the low-voltage supply lose capacity, semiconductor junctions are weakened without being punched through, and solder joints that were already marginal take a thermal shock. The board keeps meeting its specification — until the margin it had left runs out.

That is why the failure arrives late, and why it arrives intermittently. A weakened supply capacitor will hold the rail up when the board is cold and drop it when the appliance has been running for an hour. So the oven works in the morning and refuses in the evening, or the cooktop wakes on the third press instead of the first. Owners describe this as the appliance being temperamental. It is not temperamental. It is a supply rail that is failing under load.

Why this county sees so much of it

The Jacksonville area records roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year. That is the figure that shapes the whole seasonal shape of our work. It is not a claim about lightning records or a superlative about the region; it is simply the number of days a year on which a storm passes through, and every one of them is an opportunity for the supply to do something the appliance was not designed for.

The exposure is not evenly distributed. Houses on the Doctors Lake shore and on the Pace Island peninsula take the weather with nothing in front of them. Newer construction in Oakleaf Plantation is no better protected than older construction in Orange Park, because a modern control board is if anything more sensitive than the electromechanical timer it replaced.

What we check before condemning a board

A board is an expensive part and we do not want to guess. Four things get ruled out first.

Supply. We measure at the appliance, not at the panel. A loose neutral or a worn receptacle produces intermittent behaviour that looks exactly like board failure and costs a fraction to fix.

Connections. Ribbon connectors and spade terminals at the board loosen with thermal cycling. Heat-discoloured terminals tell their own story, and a reseated connector that cures the fault is a genuine repair, not a temporary one.

Loads. A shorting element, a stalled fan motor or a failing igniter can drag a supply rail down and present as a control fault. If a board has already been replaced once and failed again, this is where the real fault is hiding.

The rest of the kitchen. When two or three appliances on the same circuit have all become odd since the same outage, we are no longer looking at an appliance problem.

The honest version of the estimate

If it is the board, we say so, we tell you what a genuine OEM board costs, and you decide with the number in front of you. Some of those decisions go the other way — on an older appliance the board can be a meaningful fraction of a replacement, and it is your call to make with real figures rather than after the part has already been ordered.

What actually helps

Whole-house surge protection at the panel is the single most effective measure, and it protects the appliances that cannot be unplugged. Point-of-use protection at the receptacle helps for things that plug in, which excludes most built-in equipment. Neither is something we sell, and both are worth more than any repair we could offer after the fact.
