Viking Burner and Oven Probe Faults in Oakleaf

Ignition and control, in that order

When a burner will not light, or an oven will not hold its setpoint, in a house of this age, the cause is nearly always the ignition circuit, the temperature probe, or the control. Those three are separated by measurement rather than by guesswork, and the sequence is fixed.

An ignition complaint is worked from the supply inward. If another burner on the same manifold lights normally, the fault is local to one burner and the spark module is not the suspect. If nothing on the cooktop lights, the question moves upstream before anything is disassembled. When three burners light and a fourth only clicks, the module goes to the top of the list, because spark modules lose output channels one at a time rather than failing all at once.

A temperature complaint is worked from the cavity outward. An oven has no direct knowledge of how hot it is; it heats until a resistance probe reports the setpoint. When that probe drifts, the control does exactly what it was designed to do and holds the cavity at the wrong temperature with no fault to report, because from its point of view there is nothing wrong. So we measure the cavity independently and compare it against what the control believes. That single reading separates a drifted probe from a failed element from a control fault, and it is the reason an element replaced on a drift complaint is the most common wasted repair we are called in to correct.

Newer houses, newer failure modes

Much of the housing stock here is recent, which changes the profile again. We see fewer worn-out hinges than in the older river neighbourhoods and more first-generation control and ignition faults: a spark module with one channel gone, an igniter that has fouled early, a sensor reading a few degrees off from the day it was installed.

Summer storms even the score. The area records roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, and a new board is no more surge-tolerant than an old one. A range that has gone dead after a storm, or that wakes intermittently since one, is the single most common call we take from this ZIP between June and September.

The pattern is worth recognising, because almost nobody connects the two events at the time. A control board that absorbed a surge usually keeps working afterwards. Two or three weeks later it begins failing to wake on demand, then it fails outright. By then the outage has been forgotten. We ask about it on every intermittent-electronics call from this ZIP in summer, and the answer is almost always yes.

Tight construction changes the ventilation picture

The other consequence of newer housing is air. Recent construction here is built tight, and a professional vent hood moves a serious volume of air out of a kitchen — air that has to be replaced from somewhere. When the make-up air path is inadequate, the hood pulls against the building envelope instead of through it.

The symptoms are recognisable once you know them: doors that resist opening while the hood is on high, a hood that is loud but visibly ineffective, and any change in the behaviour of a gas appliance elsewhere in the house when the hood goes to full speed. That last one is a safety matter rather than a comfort one, and it is worth stopping the high setting until someone has looked at the path properly.

It is also a common reason a hood in a newer Oakleaf kitchen is judged weak when the blower is perfectly healthy. Replacing a motor does not change the pressure it is fighting.
