Buying a Used Viking Range: What to Check First
Where the rating plate hides, how to read the model and build date, and the burner, oven and door tests to run before you pay for a second-hand Viking range.

A used Viking range is a good buy when three things check out before you pay: which series and model it really is, how old it is, and whether every burner, the oven and the door still behave. The serial number gives you the build date, the model number tells you which fuel it was set up for, and a short test run with the oven heating tells you more than any listing photo. The same checks apply when the range comes with a house you are buying in Orange Park, Oakleaf Plantation or Doctors Lake.
Find the rating plate first
Every Viking range has a rating plate printed with its model and serial number. On a 5 Series freestanding gas model, Viking puts it in one of three places, so check the side panel on the left under the front grate support, then the frame of the oven face below the controls, then the underside of the control panel over the door. A 7 Series keeps its label under the control panel, which you see once the oven door is open. Tuscany dual fuel ranges hide the plate on an inside wall, visible after you slide out the storage drawer. If a seller will not let you look for it, slow down; a missing label also makes ordering parts harder later.
Read the model number and the build date
The model number starts with the base model, and two letters for the finish follow it, plus letters for the gas type on models that have one. Viking illustrates this with VGIC53024BWHLP: the base model is VGIC53024B, and the letters after it mark a white finish and a propane setup. Across the 5 Series, VGR means sealed-burner gas, VGIC open-burner gas, VDR dual fuel, VER electric and VIR induction. A 7 Series will be one of four: VGR7362 or VGR7482 on gas, VDR7362 or VDR7482 on dual fuel.
The first six digits of the serial are the build date, month first, then day and year, so serial 082421C10019872 left the line on August 24, 2021. A range sold as nearly new that dates much older deserves a closer look.
Then match the gas code to your home. A propane range on a natural gas line, or the reverse, must be converted before the flames burn correctly, and the built-in regulator on a 5 Series gas range must never be bypassed.
Light every burner and run the oven
Insist on seeing the range connected. Turn the burners on one at a time: the igniter should click, a flame should catch within a few seconds, and the clicking should stop once it is lit. Look for an even blue ring with no lazy yellow tips and no gaps around the cap. Clicking that never stops, or a burner that sparks without catching, usually means wet or worn igniters or a crooked cap; our page on a burner that sparks but will not light covers those causes.
Next, let the oven preheat fully on bake, then try the broiler. On a gas model with the Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler, the broil burner should glow orange evenly. An oven that heats far too slowly needs a technician before the sale, not after.
Check the door, knobs and finish
Viking oven doors are heavy, and the hinges and gasket carry that weight for years. Open the door halfway and let go; it should hold or ease shut rather than drop. Feel the gasket for tears and flat spots, and look for brown scorch marks on the trim above the door, a sign of heat leaking out. If the door already sags, read about a heavy oven door that stops sealing. Each knob should turn smoothly and stop firmly at off. Scratched stainless is cosmetic; rusted grate supports and cracked burner caps are not.
Brackets, power and space
Ask whether the anti-tip hardware comes along. On a 5 Series freestanding range those are the metal brackets shipped in the box, and the installation manual warns owners to fit them rather than discard them. A 5 Series gas range also needs a grounded three-prong 120-volt outlet on its own separately fused circuit. Without a hood, wall cabinets directly above must sit at least 42 inches over the cooking surface.
Service history and what a check costs
Ask for receipts; recent igniter or element work is a good sign. In years three through five Viking’s warranty supplies parts only on items such as gas burners and electric elements, with ignition systems, burner bases and caps excluded, and the owner pays labor and shipping. Ask Viking whether any coverage still applies to a second owner.
Our $80 diagnostic tests the burners, ignition, oven temperature and door before you commit. If a worn part turns up, an igniter or burner assembly typically falls in the $190–$560 range and an oven element or thermostat in the $190–$610 range, with the firm figure given after diagnosis. Details are on our range repair page.
What does this range work cost?
The bands that fit this fault, not the whole book. Parts and labour together.
| Work | Usual range | What moves it inside the band |
|---|---|---|
| Finding the fault | $80 | Nothing moves it. One figure for any appliance anywhere in the radius. Flat diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair when you approve the work. |
| Oven thermostat or heating element | $190–$610 | Whether the cavity has drifted out of tolerance or an element has failed open — and whether the oven has to come out of its opening to be reached. |
| Igniter or burner assembly | $190–$560 | Whether one spark channel has gone or the module has, and whether the burner head itself is still serviceable. |
| Control board or touch panel | $410–$1,000 | The board carries most of it. What is left is availability: a long-superseded model line is the slow, dear case. |
Parts and labour together, for this equipment in Orange Park and the rest of the radius. A band is not a quote: the figure you approve is written down once the appliance has been measured, and it lands inside the band above unless you are told on the day why it does not. The whole book, and the replace-instead comparison.
