If a panel has warped, or a worn hinge has been carrying it out of square for years, the panel is usually the cabinetmaker’s problem rather than ours — and we will tell you which of the two you have rather than quoting hardware that will not fix it.

What we actually find behind the gate

The housing here was built out from the late 1980s onward, which puts a great deal of the original built-in equipment into its second or third decade. That is precisely the age at which mechanical wear starts reporting for attention.

Hinges and springs come first. A professional oven door and a built-in refrigerator door are both heavy, and both are held closed by hardware with a finite number of cycles in it. When the door stops pulling flush along its top edge, the consequence is not cosmetic: an oven starts running its element longer to hold a setpoint it can no longer reach, and a refrigerator starts admitting humid air that condenses on the evaporator. Most of the “my oven runs cool” and “there is water under the crisper” calls we take on Pace Island resolve at the door.

Ignition comes second. Igniters foul, ceramics crack, and spark modules lose one output channel at a time. Oven temperature sensors drift quietly and the control follows them without complaint.

Surge damage to appliance control boards is the most seasonal thing we see: a cluster of calls in the weeks after each round of summer storms, usually described as an appliance that has become intermittent rather than one that has stopped.
