Viking Dishwasher Repair: Drainage and Latch

A built-in dishwasher is the most connected appliance in the kitchen. It hangs from the counter rather than standing on the floor, it is plumbed at both ends, it sits on a circuit it shares with nothing else, and on a panelled unit its door is carrying a piece of your cabinetry. Most of what we are called to is really about one of those four connections rather than about the machine as an object.

Film and grit are two different faults

The two cleaning complaints sound alike on the phone and separate immediately in person, so it is worth knowing which one you have before you call.

Grit — solids left sitting on the dishes — is mechanical. It points at a blocked spray arm, a filter that has not been cleaned in a long while, a wash pump that has lost pressure, or a diverter that has stopped alternating between the upper and lower arms. Each of those is confirmed by watching the machine run rather than by guessing at it, and because the cheapest causes are also the most common, they get checked first.

Film — an even haze that covers the glass and does not come off with a rinse — is chemical, and it is usually a dosing and rinsing question rather than a broken component. Detergent quantity, rinse aid, the temperature of the incoming supply and how thoroughly dishes are pre-rinsed before they go in all change it. Where that is what we find, we will say so during the diagnostic rather than sell you a wash pump, because a pump will not fix it.

The distinction matters for a third reason. A permanent haze that has been building on thin glassware for months is often damage to the glass itself rather than a deposit sitting on it, and no repair to the machine will bring it back. Better to know that before parts are ordered than after.

Drainage is the most common call

Standing water in the sump at the end of a cycle has a short list of causes, and they are worth checking in order because the cheapest are the most likely.

The filter and sump come first. Then the drain hose, especially its high loop — a hose that has been knocked down flat during work under the sink lets waste water siphon back and produces exactly this symptom. Then the air gap or disposal connection: a new disposal installed without knocking out the dishwasher inlet plug is a classic no-drain that has nothing to do with the dishwasher at all. Only after those do we look at the drain pump itself, and by then we usually already know from the sound the machine makes whether the pump is running.

Leaks

Water on the floor at the base of the door is usually the door gasket or the door alignment, not a burst hose. A built-in dishwasher hangs from the counter and is levelled to the cabinet; when the levelling has shifted — after a floor was replaced, for instance — the door no longer meets the tub squarely and it weeps at the bottom corners under load.

Leaks that appear only on longer or hotter cycles are worth reporting as such. That detail points at a component that only becomes wet or hot late in the programme, and it narrows the search considerably.

Latches, doors and controls

The door latch does double duty: it holds the door and it tells the control the door is closed. A cycle that will not start, or one that stops partway through and drains, is often a latch switch rather than a control fault. Springs and cables carry the weight of a heavy panelled door, and when a cable frays the door drops under its own weight — usually onto whoever is loading the bottom rack.
